Diagonal deformations of thin center vortices and their stability in Yang-Mills theories
The importance of center vortices for the understanding of the confining
properties of SU(N) Yang-Mills theories is well established in the lattice.
However, in the continuum, there is a problem concerning the relevance of
center vortex backgrounds. They display the so called Savvidy-Nielsen-Olesen
instability, associated with a gyromagnetic ratio for the
off-diagonal gluons.
In this work, we initially consider the usual definition of a {\it thin}
center vortex and rewrite it in terms of a local color frame in SU(N)
Yang-Mills theories. Then, we define a thick center vortex as a diagonal
deformation of the thin object. Besides the usual thick background profile,
this deformation also contains a frame defect coupled with gyromagnetic ratio
, originated from the charged sector. As a consequence, the
analysis of stability is modified. In particular, we point out that the defect
should stabilize a vortex configuration formed by a pair of straight components
separated by an appropriate finite distance.Comment: 20 pages, LaTe
A Faddeev-Niemi Solution that Does Not Satisfy Gauss' Law
Faddeev and Niemi have proposed a reformulation of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in
terms of a U(1) gauge theory with 8 off-shell degrees of freedom. We present a
solution to Faddeev and Niemi's formulation which does not solve the SU(2)
Yang-Mills Gauss constraints. This demonstrates that the proposed reformulation
is inequivalent to Yang-Mills, but instead describes Yang-Mills coupled to a

Two-dimensional mapping of triaxial strain fields in a multiferroic BiFeO3 thin film using scanning x-ray microdiffraction
The dramatically enhanced polarizations and saturation magnetizations observed in the epitaxially constrained BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films with their pronounced grain-orientation dependence have attracted much attention and are attributed largely to the constrained in-plane strain. Thus, it is highly desirable to directly obtain information on the two-dimensional (2D) distribution of the in-plane strain and its correlation with the grain orientation of each corresponding microregion. Here the authors report a 2D quantitative mapping of the grain orientation and the local triaxial strain field in a 250 nm thick multiferroic BFO film using a synchrotron x-ray microdiffraction technique. This direct scanning measurement demonstrates that the deviatoric component of the in-plane strain tensor is between 5x10(-3) and 6x10(-3) and that the local triaxial strain is fairly well correlated with the grain orientation in that particular region. Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation of Miscanthus sinensis
Miscanthus species are tall perennial rhizomatous grasses with C4 photosynthesis originating from East Asia, and they are considered as important bioenergy crops for biomass production. In this study, Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system for M. sinensis was developed using embryogenic calli derived from mature seeds. In order to establish a stable system, optimum conditions to obtain highly regenerable and transformation-competent embryogenic calli were investigated, and embryogenic calli were efficiently induced with callus induction medium containing 3 mg L-1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 25 mM l-proline, at pH 5.7 with an induction temperature of 28 A degrees C. In addition, the embryogenic callus induction and regeneration potentials were compared between seven M. sinensis germplasms collected from several sites in Korea, which revealed that the germplasm SNU-M-045 had superior embryogenic callus induction and regeneration potentials. With this germplasm, the genetic transformation of M. sinensis was performed using Agrobacterium tumefaciens EHA105 carrying pCAMBIA1300 with a green fluorescence protein gene as a reporter. After putative transgenic plants were obtained, the genomic integration of transgenes was confirmed by genomic PCR, transgene expression was validated by Northern blot analysis, and the number of transgene integration was confirmed by DNA gel blot analysis. Furthermore, the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of M. sinensis was also performed with pCAMBIA3301 which contains an herbicide resistance gene (BAR), and we obtained transgenic M. sinensis plants whose herbicide resistance was confirmed by spraying with BASTA(A (R)). Therefore, we have established a stable Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system for M. sinensis, and also successfully produced herbicide-resistant Miscanthus plants by introducing BAR gene via the established method.X111210Ysciescopu
Nonabelian Faddeev-Niemi Decomposition of the SU(3) Yang-Mills Theory
Faddeev and Niemi (FN) have introduced an abelian gauge theory which
simulates dynamical abelianization in Yang-Mills theory (YM). It contains both
YM instantons and Wu-Yang monopoles and appears to be able to describe the
confining phase. Motivated by the meson degeneracy problem in dynamical
abelianization models, in this note we present a generalization of the FN
theory. We first generalize the Cho connection to dynamical symmetry breaking
pattern SU(N+1) -> U(N), and subsequently try to complete the Faddeev-Niemi
decomposition by keeping the missing degrees of freedom. While it is not
possible to write an on-shell complete FN decomposition, in the case of SU(3)
theory of physical interest we find an off-shell complete decomposition for
SU(3) -> U(2) which amounts to partial gauge fixing, generalizing naturally the
result found by Faddeev and Niemi for the abelian scenario SU(N+1) -> U(1)^N.
We discuss general topological aspects of these breakings, demonstrating for
example that the FN knot solitons never exist when the unbroken gauge symmetry
is nonabelian, and recovering the usual no-go theorems for colored dyons.Comment: Latex 30 page
miR-93/miR-106b/miR-375-CIC-CRABP1: a novel regulatory axis in prostate cancer progression
Capicua (CIC) has been implicated in pathogenesis of spinocerebellar ataxia type-1 (SCA1) neurodegenerative disease and some types of cancer; however, the role of CIC in prostate cancer remains unknown. Here we show that CIC suppresses prostate cancer progression. CIC expression was markedly decreased in human prostatic carcinoma. CIC overexpression suppressed prostate cancer cell proliferation, invasion, and migration, whereas CIC RNAi exerted opposite effects. We found that knock-down of CIC derepresses expression of ETV5 and CRABP1 in LNCaP and PC-3 cells, respectively, thereby promoting cell proliferation and invasion. We also discovered that miR-93, miR-106b, and miR-375, which are known to be frequently overexpressed in prostate cancer patients, cooperatively down-regulate CIC levels to promote cancer progression. The effect of umbilical cord blood derived mesenchymal stem cells in monocrotaline-induced pulmonary artery hypertension rats
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) causes right ventricular failure due to a gradual increase in pulmonary vascular resistance. The purposes of this study were to confirm the engraftment of human umbilical cord blood-mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) placed in the correct place in the lung and research on changes of hemodynamics, pulmonary pathology, immunomodulation and several gene expressions in monocrotaline (MCT)induced PAH rat models after hUCB-MSCs transfusion. The rats were grouped as follows: the control (C) group; the M group (MCT 60 mg/kg); the U group (hUCB-MSCs transfusion). They received transfusions via the external jugular vein a week after MCT injection. The mean right ventricular pressure (RVP) was significantly reduced in the U group after the 2 week. The indicators of RV hypertrophy were significantly reduced in the U group at week 4. Reduced medial wall thickness in the pulmonary arteriole was noted in the U group at week 4. Reduced number of intra-acinar muscular pulmonary arteries was observed in the U group after 2 week. Protein expressions such as endothelin (ET)-1, endothelin receptor A (ERA), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 significantly decreased at week 4. The decreased levels of ERA, eNOS and MMP-2 immunoreactivity were noted by immnohistochemical staining. After hUCB-MSCs were administered, there were the improvement of RVH and mean RVP. Reductions in several protein expressions and immunomodulation were also detected. It is suggested that hUCB-MSCs may be a promising therapeutic option for PAH.1174Ysciescopu
IL-12p40 Homodimer Ameliorates Experimental Autoimmune Arthritis
IL-23 is the key cytokine that induces the expansion of Th17 cells. It is composed of p19 and p40 subunits of IL-12. The p40 subunit binds competitively to the receptor of IL-23 and blocks its activity. Our aim was to assess the preventive and therapeutic effect of the IL-12p40 homodimer (p40)(2) subunit in autoimmune arthritis animal models. In the current study, using IL-1R antagonist-knockout mice and a collagen-induced arthritis model, we investigated the suppressive effect of (p40)(2) on inflammatory arthritis. We demonstrated that the recombinant adenovirus-expressing mouse (p40)(2) model prevented the development of arthritis when given before the onset of arthritis. It also decreased the arthritis index and joint erosions in the mouse model if transferred after arthritis was established. (p40)(2) inhibited the production of inflammatory cytokines and Ag-specific T cell proliferation. It also induced CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3 regulatory T (Treg) cells in vitro and in vivo, whereas the generation of retinoic acid receptor-related organ receptor gamma t and Th17 cells was suppressed. The induction of Treg cells and the suppression of Th17 cells were mediated via activated STAT5 and suppressed STAT3. Our data suggest that (p40)(2) suppressed inflammatory arthritis successfully.
